Unlock the Structure of Classical and Modern Chinese: A Linguistic Deep Dive

This monograph presents a rigorous comparative analysis of super-phrasal units in ancient and modern Chinese, applying the theory of functional sentence perspective developed by the Prague Linguistic School (V. Mathesius, F. Daneš, J. Firbas). The study maps each super-phrasal unit to a specific theme-rheme progression, exploring how topic and comment are extracted from sentences in Chinese. The author provides formulaic descriptions of these structures, accompanied by an analysis of cohesive devices. The methodology is demonstrated to be applicable across language types, including Russian, English, and both classical and contemporary Chinese. Examples from classical texts include the Mencius, the Analects, and the Tao Te Ching, while modern Chinese analysis draws on Eileen Chang’s novel Xiao Ai. This volume is a reprint of the author’s 2014 master’s thesis defended at Jilin University (Changchun, China). It is intended for postgraduate students and researchers in Chinese syntax, as well as advanced undergraduates studying classical Chinese (wenyan).
