This monograph offers a detailed structural and semantic analysis of sentences and supra-phrasal units in early Classical Chinese (5th–3rd centuries BCE). The study is based on key texts including the Lunyu, Mengzi, Mozi, Xunzi, Han Feizi, and the Dao De Jing. Sentence structure is examined through immediate constituent analysis, working from smaller to larger units. Semantic analysis focuses on identifying synonyms, antonyms, closely related lexemes, and terms belonging to common semantic classes, as well as determining the antecedents of pronouns. Using concrete examples, the author demonstrates how semantic and partial syntactic analysis can be performed by colour-coding relevant text segments, training readers to visualise ancient Chinese texts.
The work includes a semantic classification of nouns and verbs, a structural classification of sentences, and a list of key thematic progression patterns used to construct supra-phrasal units. It shows that Daneš’s thematic progressions can successfully analyse text structure not only in Indo-European languages but also in early Classical Chinese. This monograph is intended for postgraduate and doctoral researchers working on the syntax of ancient Chinese, instructors of courses such as "History of the Chinese Language" and "Foundations of Classical Chinese (Wenyan)," as well as students studying these subjects.
