In the summer of 1978, two Englishmen—engineer Donald Cameron and Major Christopher Davey—came closer than anyone before to crossing the Atlantic by balloon. On Wednesday, July 26, their bright yellow balloon Zanussi lifted off from Newfoundland, Canada. Nearly 50 meters in diameter, it carried a red gondola shaped like a lifeboat, measuring four and a half meters in length, designed to keep the crew safe in case of an emergency water landing. Although the balloon was forced to land just 100 kilometers short of its target, the flight remains a landmark of meticulous technical, organizational, and psychological preparation. This book, now published in Russian for the first time, is intended for a broad audience.
