The Light of the Desert: With Nicholas Roerich’s Expedition Through Central Asia
This book presents a rare and detailed look into the remarkable Central Asian expedition led by academician Nicholas Roerich from 1925 to 1928. The journey, also known as the Tibetan or Trans-Himalayan expedition, began in late 1923 after the Roerichs arrived in India. It passed through Darjeeling, Kashmir, Ladakh, Xinjiang, Soviet Russia (Moscow, Altai, and Buryatia), Mongolia (southwestern Gobi), and Tibet, finally ending in Darjeeling in spring 1928.
The expedition had multifaceted goals, and its unique character is understood through published reports by the Roerichs and recently available diary entries by key participants. This collection includes Roerich’s work The Light of the Desert and the expedition diaries of Nikolai Viktorovich Kordashevsky (1877–1945), the convoy chief. A former colonel in the Russian army, Kordashevsky was invited by Roerich and joined the expedition during its Mongolian and Tibetan stages. Compiled by O. G. Boldyrev.
