Sergey Glebovich Burov: Pasternak in Search of Historiosophy
This study examines Boris Pasternak’s creative engagement with the historiosophical ideas of Pyotr Chaadaev and Oswald Spengler. The influence of Chaadaev’s Philosophical Letters and Spengler’s The Decline of the West is traced through Pasternak’s works from the late 1920s to early 1930s, as well as his novel Doctor Zhivago. The author also seeks to clarify when and how Pasternak first encountered these thinkers, and against this backdrop, identifies echoes of certain texts and biographical events in Osip Mandelstam’s Conversation about Dante, traces of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novellas in Pasternak’s Twenty Stanzas with a Preface…, and reflections of Pasternak’s response to the execution of the Romanov family. A focused analysis for scholars and enthusiasts of 20th-century Russian literature. Price: 2241.00 RUR.
