Shamshad Abdullayev: "The Inventory. Essays"
This collection brings together two decades of essays by Shamshad Abdullayev, exploring literature, cinema, and painting. Abdullayev reflects on the poetry of Samuel Beckett and Paul Celan, the cinema of Alain Resnais and Atom Egoyan, and figures such as Alexander Goldstein and Vasily Kondratiev. He develops a reading method he calls "the linguistic adventure of a solitary imagination." His texts are not traditional essays but passionate lyrical monologues that convey, through their very structure, a unique experience of belonging—an intense co-existence with the infinity of world culture, from Antiquity to the Arab East, from Sufis to Italian Hermetic poets.
Shamshad Abdullayev (b. 1957) is a poet, prose writer, and informal leader of the Fergana Poetic School, which formed in Uzbekistan at the turn of the 1980s–1990s. He won the Volga/NOS Prize for his story collection "Another South" (published by Nosorog, 2020).
