Shimon Peretzovich Markish: Russian-Jewish Literature from A to Z
This volume brings together over forty essays by the eminent translator and philologist Shimon (Simon) Markish (1931–2003), whose lifelong study of Russian-Jewish literature stands as his defining scholarly achievement. Markish was the son of the legendary Yiddish poet Peretz Markish, executed in the fabricated Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee case. In 1970, he left the Soviet Union to join his wife in Hungary, and from 1974 to 1996 he taught Slavic studies at the University of Geneva. In 1983, he defended his doctoral dissertation in France on the subject “Russian-Jewish Literature.”
The collection profiles prominent figures of that literary tradition, including Rabinovich, Levanda, Babel, Ehrenburg, Grossman, Jabotinsky, Shklovsky, and many others. The book was prepared for publication at the urging of historians and literary scholars in Israel, with a preface by Leonid Katsis. A comprehensive exploration of a unique cultural crossroads, this edition is essential for anyone interested in the intersection of Russian and Jewish letters.
