Vladimir Petrovich Domoratsky: At the Origins of Academic Research Centers, 1938–1964
This book traces the history of the Akademproject design organization, founded in 1938 under the guidance of renowned architect Academician A.V. Shchusev, later transformed into GIPRONII of the USSR Academy of Sciences. One of its key leaders, and later director of GIPRONII, was P.I. Domoratsky, whose 105th birth anniversary was marked in 2009. From 1938 to 1964, under his tenure, the institution evolved into a leading national design institute, responsible for projects of several world-renowned research centers. These include the academic towns in Chernogolovka, Pushchino, and near Novosibirsk. The essay briefly recounts the institute’s development and its work on major projects. The book will be useful for readers interested in the history of constructing academic research centers of the USSR Academy of Sciences during the 1930s–1960s.
